I am Marja Christians, a dance maker and choreographer, an opera singer and a dreamer with a plan: producing international performances in imaginative places.
I am in love with the unique, shared present I experience with the audience: a sparkling moment of mutual seduction and the transformative power of being together. This gift of performative companionship shapes my creations, my aesthetic and political vision of my artistic practice.
JUICY INTERSECTIONS BETWEEN OPERA SINGING AND CONTAGIOUS CHOREOGRAPHY
I develop performative practices that are funny, edgy and challenging the present bodies. I spacialize choreographies of experimental vocal singing, dance with humor, power critical desires, get a bite of it and yes, it is allowed to laugh!
I am passionate about challenging my aesthetic horizon, envisioning surprising methods of creating, growing in interdisciplinary collaborations and oh yes, enjoying!
POWER CRITICAL WAYS OF WORKING, JUICY CONCEPTS - BEHIND AND ON STAGE
In my dance performances I research on desire as a political tool and sing opera from the anus with all its political juices. I initiate projects with sweat, humor and intersectional feminist collaborators in Germany (Berlin, Frankfurt, Hannover) and internationally (Spain, France and Balkan) since 2011. I collaborate in choreography, dramaturgy and music: I co-created the transspecies performance BAD WEEDS with the choreographer Rocío Berenguer (Premiere 2023, Théâtre de la Ville, Paris, Teatros de Canal, Madrid).
IMPREGNATING AND CARING - PASSIONATE FORMS OF WORKING
I enable international artistic research processes like in the capitalist ruins of the Hotel Haludovo on the former socialist ground on the island of Krk in Croatia for the dance performance TENDER FIGHTS 2020 and Dancefloor 2022 i worked there 2020-2021. In these ruins I developed queerfeminist visions with my collaborators Ana Dubljevic, choreographer from Serbia and Kasia Kania, dancemaker from Poland. These sexy and anticapitalist choreographies were accompanied by the lascivious electronic music of 700WET- my band project, created together with the composer Cid Hohner.
Creation process in co-authorship + regular collaborations:
with inspiring colleagues that influence my changing aesthetics like the performer and the power critical educator Golschan Ahmad Haschemi (since 2014). We premiered 2023 the dance piece Like a Fish Out of Salty Water together with the choreographer Olivia Hyunsin Kim. Another passionate colleague of mine is the international dance maker Kasia Kania (since 2020) and we presented the remake of the dance performance Dancefloor 2022 as the choreographic concert: on the danceWETfloor. In regular concerts of my band project 700WET I sing opera with electronic beats and crave for the hip swings of the audience, come a bit closer and dance with me!
OH YES, THERE IS ALSO NICE PRIZES AND INTERNATIONAL FORMATION
MARJA CHRISTIANS | dreamer with a plan | choreographer | juicy opera singer | develops with power-critical humor, electronic music and queerfeminist erotic performances and visionary encounters. She sweated for some prizes like the jury prize of the Sophiensaele and others together with the audience and in the legendary performance duo christians//schwenk. She researched in the international MA in Choreography and Performance by Bojana Kunst and received a BA in cultural studies and aesthetic practice (singing, music and theater) at the University of Hildesheim. Marja had a danceWEB scholarship, had several residencies at Mousonturm Frankfurt (2021-2023) and is dramaturg of the choreographer Rocío Berenguer (Théâtre de la Ville, Paris/ Teatros de Canal, Madrid).
Marja enables self organized artistic residencies in international collaborations and develops them by the sea. Currently she is touring with the choreographic concert on the danceWETfloor and sings opera from the anus in the synthie-pop band 700WET (Berlin/Barcelona).
